Preparation:

  1. Mussels: Boil fresh mussels in 3 cups water with 1/4 tsp turmeric, 2 tsp vinegar, and salt for 10 minutes. This will open up the shells and help to remove the meat from inside (as shown in the picture on the left).

  2. In the US departmental stores, fresh mussels are sold in 2 lbs bags. The amount of meat collected though will be only 1 cup or 150 grams!!!

  3. In a bowl, marinate the collected mussel meat with the 7 ingredients listed from ginger to salt  for at least 30 minutes.

Cooking procedure:

  1. Heat oil in a kadhai. Add dry red chilli and mustard seeds for 30 seconds or till seeds crackle.

  2. Add onions and fry for 2-3 minutes or till onions are soft.

  3. Add coconut slices and fry for 1-2 minutes.

  4. Add curry leaves, green chillies, and mussels. Fry on medium heat for 7 minutes.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve with  rice and buttermilk or with rice and sambhar. Also tastes great with parathas or rotis.
